Before purchasing

1) What is necessary for making a digital environment using DWX-50?

Following environment is required.
Windows PC / 3D scanner / CAM software / tool / material / sintering furnace (for zirconia) / dust collector / compressor

No, it is not included.
3) How can I get a CAD/CAM software?

4) How can I make a cutting data for DWX-50?

You can make a cutting data using a CAM software. For information on how to use the software and/or DWX-50 settings, please contact your local dealer.

5) Where is DWX-50made?
It is made in Japan. In Japan, DWX-50 is considered as a standard medical equipment. Registration number DWX-50 : 22B3X10006000020
6) Why is it necessary to put a dust collector?
It is to prevent not only the hazardous cutting dust from getting out of the machine but also cutting dust from going inside the mechanical parts like the spindle unit. It makes malfunction of the machine. Be sure to install the vacuum system which meets the required performance.
7) Are there any requirements for a dust collector and a compressor?

Dust Collector
- Static Pressure : 4 kPa or more
- Air Flow : 2m3/min or more

Compressor
- Air Pressure : 0.2 to 1.0 MPa
- Air Capacity : 30L/min or more
- Contamination of the compressed air by foreign material is undesirable. Use an oil-free compressor.
- Moist air may cause rust. Use a device equipped with a dryer.
- Stable pressure is required. Select a source that has an adequate tank capacity.
- A hose (outer diameter : 6 mm (polyurethane tube)) is required.

8) How many teeth can I make with one zirconia disc?
Approx. 20 to 30. * Available amount varies according to the shape of object and/or CAM software settings.
9) What kind of language which can be displayed by VPanel?
Japanese, English, and Chinese (a simplified Chinese character, the traditional Chinese character) correspond.
In the language supported, it is displayed in the language, and becomes an English display in the language not supported.
10) Is making it work for 24 hours possible?

It is satisfactory.
Checking of operations is performed before product sale.
The installation environment should keep the following conditions.
Hardware requirement:
- Operating environment: Temperature of 5 to 40°C (41 to 104 °F), 35 to 80% relative humidity (no condensation)
- Ambient pollution degree: 2 (as specified by IEC 60664-1)

Specifications

1) How big is DWX-50?

External dimensions : 656 (W) x 656 (D) x 557 (H) mm

At least the following amount of space is necessary for installation.
Installation space :  0.77 x 0.77 m (30.3 x 30.3 in)
Work space :  1.27 x 1.27 m (50 x 50 in)

2) Are there any limitation for material size?

You can use general workpieces (disc and block) in the dental market.

3) What kind of material can DWX-50 cut?

DWX-50 : Zirconia (pre-sintered), modeling wax, PMMA.
* Characteristics may vary according to the material. Please contact your material manufacturer for more detail.

4) Can I use a disc without levels?

Yes, you can.
* Z origin needs to be aligned in your CAM software according to the height of the material. Please refer to the bundled manuals for more detail.

5) I would like to know a required PC for DWX-50.

Operating system :  Windows XP/Vista/7/8 (32,64 bit edition)
CPU :  The minimum required CPU for the operating system
Memory :  The minimum amount of required RAM for the operating system
Optical drive :  CD-ROM drive
Video card and monitor :  At least 256 colors with a resolution of 1,024 x 768 or more recommended)

6) Which file format is available for DWX-50?

DWX-50:RML-1 and NC code
* The cutting data created by supported CAM software can be used.

7) Which software is bundled with DWX-50?

VPanel and Windows driver are bundled.
VPanel is a program to operate DWX-50 on the computer screen. It has functions to output cutting data, perform maintenance, and make various corrections. In addition, it displays error messages of DWX-50.
Windows driver is a program to control the milling machine through your PC.

8) Which CAM software can I use?

CAM software is produced by our partner companies. Please click

9) Is DWX-50 compatible with NC code (G code)?

DWX-50 is compatible with NC code (G code).
* The NC code (G code) command created by supported CAM software can be used.

10) Is it possible to use DWX-50 for drilling?

It is possible if you send a drilling command from your CAM software.

11) Which tool can I use?

Shank diameter  : 4 mm
Length : 40 to 55 mm

12) How do you connect the machine with the PC?

USB connection (compliant with Revision 1.1).
A USB cable is included. The USB3.0 cable cannot be used.
Be sure to refrain from using a USB hub. If a USB hub is used, there is a possibility that the machine cannot be connected.

13) How long is the included USB cable? Is it possible to use any other cables in the market?

The included cable is 4.5 meters in length with a noise filter attached.
The noise filter prevents any communication error between the milling machine and your PC. It is recommend to use the bundled cable for DWX-50.

14) Are there any safety feature if a front cover is accidentally opened during cutting?

The machine makes an emergency stop as a safety feature.

15) Can I use an e-mail program which requires a user authentication?

If using a server that requires user authentication and/or encipher, a mail cannot be sent. Use a transmission server that does not require user authentication and/or encipher.

Maintenance

1) Where can I download Windows driver, VPanel Updater and Firmware Installer?

You can download them from Easy Shape Support website

2) How often do you change a consumable part?
Spindle unit : 2,000 hours
Spindle belt : 2,000 hours
* The replacement cycle varies according to usage conditions.
3) How can I make a cutting?

Please check followings.


1. Tool :  The tool(s) must be the same between the one(s) you configured in your CAM software and actual one(s) you set on ATC magazine.
2. Material :  The thickness must be the same between the one you configured in your CAM software and actual one you put on the milling machine.
3. Installing the material :  The cap must be tightened firmly.
4. Dust Collector :  The power must be turned on.
5. Compressor :  Required amount of compressed air must be supplied.

4) Is there any periodic maintenance?

Confirm tightening of a collet every 200 hours or once in a month according to the following procedure.
A collet needs to be frequently checked for tightening. If a collet is used for a prolonged period or cutting error occurs frequently, the collet may become loose and gripping force of a tool may become weak.


Open the VPanel and click [Settings]. Click [Open Collet] in the [Maintenance] tab. The collet opens.


While holding the detection pin by hands, tighten the collet by turning the spanner counterclockwise.

5) Is there anything I should consider when performing [Correct magazine] and [Correct rotary axis] in VPanel?

Red-colored areas must be cleaned up beforehand.

* Keep the detection pin in the bundled case when not in use.

6) How often do you change a tool?

Zirconia :  40 teeth
PMMA :  40 teeth
* A reference value when you use different tools for roughing and finishing. The replacement cycle varies according to usage conditions.

Troubleshooting

1) Initialization is not performed or initialization fails.

Is a front cover open?
When starting the machine, Make sure that the upper and lower front covers are closed and the COVER LED is dark. For safety, initialization is not performed when a cover remains open at startup.

Is anything caught on the spindle head or table?
Check whether something has become caught and is impeding initialization.

2) Operations are ignored.

Is the cable connected?
Connect the cable securely.

Is a front cover open?
This Machine restricts some operations when a front cover is open.
Close both the upper and lower front covers, and Make sure that the COVER LED is dark.

Is operation paused?
When the PAUSE LED is on, it Means that operation is paused.
When the Machine is paused, cutting stops and some operations are restricted.
Cancel the paused state.

Is a large amount of cutting waste present?
Clean away any cutting waste.
Clean the area around the spindle especially carefully.

Is the driver installed correctly?
If the connection to the computer is not Made in the sequence described, the driver May fail to be installed correctly.
Check again to ensure that the connection was Made using the correct procedure.

Does VPanel recognize the Machine?
There is a possibility that the Machine is not recognized by VPanel.
Check the correct connection Method.

Is the connection method correct when connecting multiple units?
The connection method may be incorrect when connecting more than one machine. Confirm the correct method.

Is the ERROR LED flashes rapidly?
An emergency stop occurred because a serious error was detected. Resuming operation is not possible. A description of the error is displayed in VPanel. Switch off the power to quit the operation, eliminate the cause, then redo the operation from the beginning. If the emergency stops continue even after eliminating the cause, contact your authorized Roland DG Corp. dealer.

Is the ERROR LED flashes slowly?
Operation was paused because an error was detected. Check the displayed message and press the operation button of the machine long to clear the error.

3) Compressed air does not come out.

Is any of the operations which need compressed air being performed?
Compressed air is supplied only when the spindle is rotating or when the tool is replaced.

Is the pressure of the regulator set correctly?
If the pressure setting of the regulator is "0," compressed air is not supplied.

Is the knob at the bottom of the regulator open?
If the knob at the bottom of the regulator is open, compressed air flows out.

4) The computer shut down.

Is a machine with a same ID connected to the computer?
When more than one machine is connected to the computer, if machines with a same ID are connected at the same time, the computer might shut down. If the computer shuts down, turn off the power of all the connected machines and disconnect the USB cables from the computer. Next, restart the computer, and then start VPanel. If VPanel does not start, install it again. Then, make the setting again in a way that a same ID is not assigned to more than one machine.

5) Installation is impossible.

If installation quits partway through, or if the wizard does not appear when you make the connection with a USB cable, take action as follows.

Windows 8
1. Use a USB cable to connect the machine and the PC, and then turn the machine on.
2. If the [Found New Hardware] wizard appears, click [Cancel] to close it. Disconnect any USB cables for printers other than this machine.
3. Click [Desktop].
4. Move the mouse to the lower right corner to display Charm and click [Settings].
5. Click [PC Information].
6. Click [Device Manager]. When the [User Account Control] screen appears, click [Continue]. The [Device Manager] screen appears.
7. Click [Show hidden devices] on the View menu.
8. Double-click [Printers] or [Other devices] in the list. Click the model name or [Unknown device], whichever appears below the item you selected.
9. Click [Delete] on the [Action] menu.
10. In the [Confirm Device Uninstall] dialog box, click [OK] to close the device manager.
11. Disconnect the USB cable that is connected to the printer, and then restart Windows.
12. Uninstall the driver. Carry out the steps from step 3 in "Setup & Maintenance Guide" (“Uninstall the Driver Windows 8”) to uninstall the driver..
13. Install the driver again according to the procedure in "Setup & Maintenance Guide"("To Install Driver Separately.").

Windows 7
1. If the [Found New Hardware] appears, click [Cancel] to close it.
2. Click the [Start] menu, then right-click [Computer]. Click [Properties].
3. Click [Device Manager]. The [User Account Control] appears, click [Continue]. The [Device Manager] appears.
4. At the [View] menu, click [Show hidden devices].
5. In the list, find [Other devices], then double-click it. When the model name you are using or [Unknown?device] appears below the item you selected, click it to choose it.
6. Go to the [Action] menu, and click [Uninstall].
7. In "Confirm Device Uninstall" window, select [Delete the driver software for this device.], and then click?[OK]. Close the [Device Manager].
8. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer, and then restart Windows.
9. Uninstall the driver. Carry out the steps from step 3 in "Uninstall the Driver Windows 7" to uninstall the driver.
10. Install the driver again according to the procedure in "Installing the Windows-based driver."

Windows Vista
1. If the [Found New Hardware] appears, click [Cancel] to close it.
2. Click the [Start] menu, then right-click [Computer]. Click [Properties].
3. Click [Device Manager]. The [User Account Control] appears, click [Continue]. The [Device Manager] appears.
4. At the [View] menu, click [Show hidden devices].
5. In the list, find [Printers] or [Other device], then double-click it. When the model name you are using or?[Unknown device] appears below the item you selected, click it to choose it.
6. Go to the [Action] menu, and click [Uninstall].
7. In "Confirm Device Uninstall" window, select [Delete the driver software for this device.], and then click?[OK]. Close the [Device Manager].
8. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer, and then restart Windows.
9. Uninstall the driver. Carry out the steps from step 3 in "Uninstall the Driver Windows Vista" to uninstall the driver.
10. Install the driver again according to the procedure in "Installing the Windows-based driver."

Windows XP
1. If the [Found New Hardware Wizard] appears, click [Finish] to close it.
2. Click the [Start] menu, then right-click [My Computer]. Click [Properties].
3. Click the [Hardware] tab, then click [Device Manager]. The [Device Manager] appears.
4. At the [View] menu, click [Show hidden devices].
5. In the list, find [Printers] or [Other device], then double-click it. When the model name you are using or [Unknown device] appears below the item you selected, click it to choose it.
6. Go to the [Action] menu, and click [Uninstall].
7. In "Confirm Device Uninstall" window, crick [OK].
8. Close the [Device Manager] and click [OK].
9. Detach the USB cable from the computer, and then restart Windows.
10. Uninstall the driver. Carry out the steps from step 3 in "Uninstall the Driver Windows XP" to uninstall the driver.
11. Install the driver again according to the procedure in "Installing the Windows-based driver."

6) Uninstalling VPanel

When uninstalling VPanel, perform following operation.
1. Quit VPanel. (Right-click (VPanel icon) in the task tray and select "Exit".)
2. From the [Start] menu, click [Control Panel] > [Programs and Functions] ([Add or Remove Programs] in Windows XP) from the [Start] menu.
3. Select [Roland VPanel for DWX-50] and click "Uninstall" (or "Delete").
4. Uninstall VPanel by following the instructions given in the window.

7) VPanel doesn't start correctly. Output cannot be made on VPanel.

Is the computer connected?
Check whether the connector cable has come loose.

Is the driver installed correctly?
If the connection to the computer is not made in the sequence described, the driver may fail to be installed correctly. VPanel
does not function normally when driver is misconfigured. Check again to ensure that the connection was made using the correct procedure.

When more than one machine is connected, are the machine connected properly according to the connection method? There is a possibility that the connection method might be incorrect when more than one machine is connected. Check the correct connection method.

8) The detection of the ATC magazine or rotary axis failed.

Is the main clamp, detection pin, or ATC magazine contaminated?
Remove contamination on the main clamp, detection pin, or ATC magazine if any. If they are contaminated due to buildup of cutting waste or the like, the sensor cannot operate correctly, making correct detection impossible.

Does the cover and/or cap of the dust collection capsule remain attached?
Remove the cover and cap of the dust collection capsule when you make a correction of the rotary axis.

9) Replacement of the tool failed.

Is the tool installed correctly?
Check the mounting position of the tool holder, or the length and diameter of the tool.

Perform auto correction.
The position of the ATC magazine might be displaced. Perform auto correction.

Is the ATC magazine contaminated?
Remove contamination on the ATC magazine if any. If the ATC magazine is contaminated due to buildup of cutting waste or the like, you may fail the tool replacement.

10) The cutting results are not attractive. / The cutting position is displaced.

Perform auto correction (correction).
Perform auto correction of the rotary axis.

You can precisely correct the moving distance in the X, Y, and Z axes and the angle of the A axis, etc.

Is the workpiece securely mounted in place?
Check the mounting state of the work piece. Fasten the work piece in place securely so that the work piece will not slip out of place or come off because of vibration during cutting or tool pressure.

Is the tool tip worn?
If the tip of the tool is worn, replace with a new tool.

11) The override cannot be set.

Is the computer connected?
Check whether the connector cable has come loose.

Check the firmware version of the milling machine.
If the firmware version of the modeling machine does not support the override function, the override cannot be set. You can check the firmware version with the following procedure.
1. Display the top window of VPanel.
2. Click the icon in the upper left of the top window.
3. Click "About".






When the "Firmware" is "V140" or later, the firmware supports the override function. (The numerals after "B" can be ignored.) If the version is prior to V140, you need to upgrade the firmware of the milling machine.

2) Which composite resin blocks can the DWX series mill?

All composite resin blocks that are attached to the DWX series can be milled.

3) What is the machining time for a composite resin block?

With a use of the genuine ZDB series milling burs, one block can be milled in the below period of time.

4) Where can the ZDB series milling burs be purchased?

The ZDB series milling burs can be purchased from our local resellers.

5) How many prothesis units can the ZDB series milling burs cut?

The below chart shows the number of prosthesis teeth the ZDB series milling burs can cut.

6) How the life of the ZDB milling burs are managed?
